Tiago Ramalho, Co-Founder and CEO of Recursive, joined a panel of industry leaders at the annual Southeast Asia Trade and Development Forum hosted by the International Institute for Trade and Development (ITD). This year’s forum, “Trade Thrives, AI Drives,” took place in Bangkok, uniting top innovators to discuss AI's transformative effects on Southeast Asia’s economic landscape.

During the panel discussion, Tiago emphasized AI’s role as a powerful tool for enhancing business efficiency, reducing environmental impact, and mitigating climate risk.

“AI is not about replacing business processes but making them more efficient—less energy, fewer CO₂ emissions, better climate risk mitigation,” Tiago explained.

Tiago also discussed Recursive’s latest innovations, focusing on Borealis, an advanced physical systems modeling solution that serves as a “digital twin” of nature to deliver hyper-local forecasts. He shared an example of Borealis in action, where it accurately forecasts water levels in Indonesia’s forests, helping efficiently manage land irrigation.

Discussing the global implications of AI-driven businesses, Tiago emphasized, “If you want to have a successful operation, it has to be global.” He explained that Recursive’s strategy combines high standards of quality with solutions tailored to local market needs, positioning Recursive as an adaptable, globally-minded innovator.

Looking to the future, Tiago urged companies to plan beyond immediate gains, drawing an analogy to the rapid evolution of the computing industry in the 1990s. Just as the first video game developers had to anticipate the rapid hardware advancements, companies today should focus on building AI strategies for the advancements of the next 5-10 years.
